Compression Formats

Swearingen 2A19

James Coman

For our weekly ACM talk, James Coman will be giving a presentation on Compression Formats. This talk will answer the question "What is the difference between .gz, .xz, .zip, .bz2..." The talk discusses different formats and tools for archiving and compressing data. Different formats will be compared in different ways such as speed and compression ratio. This talk requires no background knowledge, a basic knowledge of *nix/GNU CLI tools would be helpful to work with the compressing tools in question.

We also have a few other exciting things coming up:

  1. There will be a New CEC Mentor Program starting in the Fall! This will pair upperclassmen to new students. Note that the priority deadline was Monday, April 1st 2019, but the application may still be open. If you are interested, read more about it and complete the application at https://sc.edu/study/colleges_schools/engineering_and_computing/my_cec/mentoring/index.php.

  2. The Industrial Advisory Board Meeting is going to be on April 5th. Please look for another entry on the Home page for this.
